Rachel grew up and attended school in the South Bronx, known for its large Puerto Rican community. She also studied at the Ballet Hispanico of New York where she received her first choreography lessons.
Tikotin came to the cinema from ballet. She began her career on stage early - as a child, the actress participated in independent theatrical projects, but decided to take ballet seriously and worked with the best choreographers for several years. In the movie, the actress made her debut just as a performer of dance numbers, but quickly enough began to play dramatic roles - her debut in a new role took place in 1981, in the film "Fort Apache", where Paul Newman was Tikotin's partner.
