Letcher began his acting career with The Tropic Pickle by Jeff Daniels. Letcher's acting impressed Jeff so much that he arranged for the actor to meet with Ron Maxwell, the director of Gettysburg. Then, taking advantage of Jeff's advice, Matt moved to Los Angeles, where he quickly found work on television.
In 1995, Matt was selected to write the Nancy Travis sitcom Nearly Ideal, which ran for a season and a half. In 1998, he regularly starred in the TV series Living in Captivity.
