Born March 2, 1942, Exeter, New Hampshire, USA is an American writer, screenwriter and actor.

Since 1961 he studied at the Universities of Iowa, Vienna, Pittsburgh, in 1965 received a BA with honors from the University of New Hampshire.

Irving's first novel "Free the Bears" (in another translation, "Release the Bears") in 1968 was well received by the public, among others, Kurt Vonnegut spoke well of the book, who, incidentally, was one of Irving's teachers at the University of Iowa Writing Workshop ...

For the 1979 novel The World Through Garp's Eyes, the writer receives the National Book Prize. This same, fourth in a row, the novel brings him fame.

1999 saw the release of the film adaptation of the 1985 novel "The House Rules for Cider" (in another translation of the "Winemaker Rules"). The script for the film was written by the author himself, for which he received an Oscar. Actor Michael Caine, who played in the film, received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. In 1999, Irving published a separate book about his work on the film, My Film Business.
