June 24, 1891 - July 13, 1954 - American actor and film director. Pichel began his film career in 1930, playing "exotic character villains in early sound films," but already in 1932 he began directing. The most popular directorial works of Pichel were the adventure films The Most Dangerous Game (1932) and She (1935), the melodrama Eternal Tomorrow (1946), the film noir They Won't Believe Me (1947) and Quicksand (1950 ), the romantic fantasy comedy Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948) and the fantasy film Destination Moon (1950) .
In 1951, Destination Moon (1950) won the Bronze Lion Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in the crime and adventure genre. The same picture won the Hugo Award for the best dramatic embodiment of a fantastic theme. Pichel's paintings twice participated in the competition program of the Venice Festival: in 1947 his painting Eternal Tomorrow (1946) was nominated for the international grand prix of the festival, in 1954 the film Martin Luther (1953) was nominated for the Golden Lion of the festival. Two actors for their work in his films were nominated for an Academy Award: Monty Woolley for Best Actor in Pied Piper (1942) and Jay Carroll Naish for Best Supporting Actor in A Medal for Benny (1945).
