Born April 21, 1939, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA - Catholic sister, nun, and screenwriter.
The daughter of a nurse and a lawyer.
In 1957, she joined the Catholic Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Graduated from St. Mary's Dominican College in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1962. In 1973 she received her Master of Arts degree from St. Paul's University in Ottawa. She taught at school.
In 1981, she joined the fight for the abolition of the death penalty in the United States.
The film Dead Man Walking (directed by T. Robbins, 1995) and the opera of the same name, Dead Man Walking, are dedicated to her story.
Helen Prejean is a Prix Pacem in Terris (1998) laureate.
