Born June 5, 1964 in the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles, into a Jewish family with roots in Ukraine. She studied at San Francisco State University. She worked as an assistant editor on Boyz 'N the Hood (1991) and Used People (1992). She entered Columbia University Film School, where she studied with Milos Forman. While studying, she shot two short films Souvenir (1994) and Dinner Party (1996). In 1998 she shot her first feature film, High Art, which was highly acclaimed by critics. She directed popular television series: "Slaughter Department"; "The client is always dead" and "Sex in another city".
In 2010, the movie "The Kids Are Alright" was released, in which she acted as a director and co-writer. The film received a Golden Globe for Best Film - Musical or Comedy and was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Picture category.
Cholodenko is an open lesbian who came out in the 11th grade. Is in a relationship with guitarist Wendy Melvoin. The couple have a son, Calder, whom Cholodenko gave birth to from an anonymous sperm donor.
