He made his film debut with a script for the television show "Saturday Night Live" (1980-1981) .
He was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA for his screenplay for Bullets Over Broadway (1994), and twice received a Writers Guild of America nomination for Emma and Bullets Over Broadway .
In 1996, McGrath directed his first film Emma .
Among his works are such films as "Lessons in Love" (1993, screenplay), "My Boyfriend" (1999), "Nicholas Nickleby" (2002), "Bad Fame" (2006), "His Way" (TV, 2011), "I don't know how she does it" (2011) and others.
