Oles Gonchar was born in the village of Sukhoye in 1918. From an early school age he was fond of literature, wrote well.

In 1933, after graduating from a seven-year school, he began to work in the publication "Deployed Front". At the same time, he was educated at the Kharkov technical school, after which he left for the village of Manuilovka and began teaching at school. At the same time, Gonchar was admitted to the staff of the Leninskaya Smena newspaper. In 1937, the first stories of the young writer were published. Soon he wanted to continue his studies and became a student at Kharkov University. In his student years he created the works "Stokozovo Field", "Ivan Mostovoy", "Cherries Blossom", "Eaglet".

In 1941, Oles went to the front as a volunteer, and a year later he was caught by the enemy. In 1943 he managed to escape from captivity. He was awarded several military awards. After demobilization, Gonchar settled in the city of Dnepropetrovsk. There he completed his university education and wrote the first part of "Standard Bearers", published in 1946. Soon Oles moved to Kiev and entered the graduate school of the Literary Institute. At the same time, he continues to compose stories and short stories. Films are being shot, the scriptwriter of which is Gonchar. The first picture, The Girl from the Lighthouse, was presented to the audience in 1956. Soon, other films with the participation of Oles Honchar also appear: Tavria and Partizanskaya Spark.

In 1959, Oles took the positions of secretary of the USSR Writers' Union and chairman of the NSPU. In 1960 he reached the heights of creative success, his works "Man and Weapon", "Tronka" were published. The latter was filmed in 1971. Later, Olesya Gonchara's filmography was replenished with the pictures of the Entrant, Love wins everything, A strip of uncut wild flowers.

The writer led an active political and social life. For some time he was a deputy of the Council of Nationalities of the USSR Armed Forces, as well as a candidate member of the CPSU Central Committee. He continued to write almost until his death.

Oles died in the summer of 1995 and was buried at the Baikovo cemetery.
