After graduating from the Novgorod-Seversk gymnasium, Kulish earned money by teaching in Lutsk and Kiev, and after that he took up areography under the leadership of M. Maksimovich. It was here that he met Gulak, Belozersky and Kostomarov, a little later Taras Shevchenko would join their company, and in 1845-1846 like-minded people created the Cyril and Methodius brotherhood, condemning serfdom and professing the ideals of freedom, civil rights and democracy. At that time, Kulish, due to his literary activity, was widely known both among the intelligentsia and among the people. Thanks to his deep philosophical knowledge, Panteleimon Aleksandrovich receives an offer to teach at St. Petersburg University. Here, in the capital, he will marry Alexandra Belozerskaya. Here he also writes his famous essays on the Cossacks and Cossack life.

Kulish lived in St. Petersburg until 1881 - not accepting the Emsky decree banning printing in the Ukrainian language, he moved to Lvov, and in his declining years he returned to his native land, where he completely devoted himself to literature. There he died - it happened in 1897, but his memory still lives on. So, the work of the writer is not only studied in schools, but also repeatedly filmed.
