English actor John Standing (passport John Ronald Leon) was born in London in August 1934. His parents were Ronald George Leon and Dorothy Catherine Standing. His father was a professional broker, and his mother worked as an actress. Several generations of Standings formed a long acting dynasty, so in adulthood, John took his mother's surname.
He studied first at Milfield School, then at Eton College. After graduating, Standing went to serve in the Royal Rifle Corps. Honored with the rank of second lieutenant, John entered the College of Art and Design in London.
Standing has performed extensively on London and New York theater stages. He has starred in productions based on the works of Oscar Wilde, Jean Anouil, John Osborne and Noel Coward. In the comedy Private Lives, he performed with such a famous actress as Maggie Smith.
