Taras Shevchenko was born in 1814 on February 25 in a small village called Morintsy, Kiev province in the Russian Empire (now Cherkasy region in Ukraine). This is a great Ukrainian poet, prose writer, ethnographer, artist and revolutionary democrat. The basis of Shevchenko's literary heritage is poetry, the key in which was his collection called Kobzar, which has now become the main one in Ukrainian literature, as well as the standard of the Ukrainian literary language. He was a member of the Cyril and Methodius Brotherhood, and was also active during the national Ukrainian revival.

Today you can read online Taras Shevchenko's stories, letters, diaries and poems, which he wrote in both Ukrainian and Russian, so his work is also referred to as Russian literature.

Taras was born into a large family of a serf. When the boy was 2 years old, his parents moved to another village - Kirilovka, where Shevchenko spent his childhood. After the death of his mother, Taras lived with his stepmother, who did not particularly favor the boy, so the kind and gentle elder sister Ekaterina took care of Taras until he was nine years old. When the boy was 12, his father died. This event became the starting point at the beginning of the difficult nomadic life of the future great author.

Taras owes his education to Engelgard, who sent a talented guy to study at the University of Vilnius. Shevchenko stayed there for a year and a half. Since 1832, Engelgard decided to turn Taras into a home painter and sent him to study with the "painting master" Shiryaev.

Shevchenko's heyday as a writer fell on the years 1840-1846. In 1842 the legendary Kobzar was published, two years later Gaidamaki (the author's largest poetic work). Shevchenko of that time was condemned, but the poet was not worried.
