Potap, or Aleksey Potapenko, was born on May 8, 1981 in a Kiev family of a military man and an athlete. In childhood and adolescence, Alexey was fond of sports, music, played in the student KVN. He began writing songs as a teenager. Potap received two higher educations: pedagogical - teacher of physical education and master of economic sciences.
