Alice In Chains was founded in 1987 when Lane Staley met Jerry Cantrell in a Seattle bar. Lane was already a drummer in various groups at the age of twelve, but dreamed of singing. Jerry had a passion for the guitar at seventeen, and he also had experience in playing. Mike Star joined the band as bass player and Sean Kinney as drummer. After a series of performances titled Diamond Lie, Alice In Chains invited Mother Love Bone for a concert together, which would eventually become the band's first notable entry. A couple of years later, Columbia Records found it possible to sign a contract with Alice In Chains. A year later, the band released the heavy metal album Facelift, which immediately went gold. The film with Alice In Chains - Singles, which featured one of the band's main hits, Would?, Seriously added to its popularity.

After concerts in America, Alice In Chains toured Europe with Megadeth and was nominated for the first time for a Grammy, albeit unsuccessfully. After exhausting tours - their Clash Of the Titans, as well as with the group Van Halen - the musicians recorded the album Sap, and in 1992 - Dirt, which became platinum twice. The songs Junkhead and Angry Chair sound revelatory, revealing the tragedy of drug addicts and reflecting the situation with Lane Staley.

Mike Star leaves the band after performing at the Brazilian Hollywood Festival. Ozzy bassist will take his place. The next breakthrough in the band's work will be the soundtrack for the film Last Action by Him Schwarzenegger and will gain platinum status. I Stay Awau is a song from the new Jar Of Flies disc, which will lead the Billboard charts and will not receive a Grammy again. The same fate awaits the album Alice In Chains: the first step in the chart and loss at the Grammy. On the cover of this album by the group Alice In Chains, a photo of a dog with three legs turned out to be symbolic: Lane Staley was really no longer coping with his drug addiction. At 34, he will die of an overdose in a Seattle apartment.

Alice In Chains will resume its activities after 2005: the soundtrack with the song Rooster will be included in the film Terminator: Salvation, in 2009 the album Black Gives Way to Blue with Elton John will be released.
