Leningrad is the place where Valentin Pikul, the author of controversial and unusually popular novels about the history of Russia, was born on July 13, 1928. Due to the fact that the head of the family was sent to Severodvinsk (then Molotovsk) to work, a year before the start of the war, the Pikuli settled in this city. Valentin studied at school, attended a circle of young sailors. I met the summer of 1941 in Leningrad. He was taken with his mother to Molotovsk a year later, having experienced the horrors of the blockade winter. Deciding to take revenge on the Nazis, he fled to Solovki, from where, after graduating from school, the boy Valentin Pikul, at the age of fifteen, began serving on the destroyer Grozny. His mother died in 1942, his father died at Stalingrad in 1943. After the war, Valentin never graduated from the naval school in Leningrad, and his education ended with five classes. Was a diver and a firefighter but everything was overpowered by a huge interest in literature.

The first publication of the writer dates back to 1947. Seven years later, for the novel, Pikul's Ocean Patrol will be admitted to the Writers' Union. In 1961, Bayazet's first major historical work would bring him fame. Continuing the theme, written already in Riga, where Pikul will move with Veronika, his second wife, a two-part novel In the Backyard of a Great Empire (1964-1966). But the real popularity will come to Valentin Pikul after the novel called Pen and Sword. It, in turn, will be continued by the work of the Battle of the Iron Chancellors. The Defense Ministry prize will be awarded to the novel From the Dead End - the writer will give it to the treatment of Afghan soldiers. He will do the same with the Gorky Prize, which he will be awarded for the novel The Cruiser - it will be given to those who suffered from the Spitak earthquake. Pikul's most controversial work - Unclean Power - was mercilessly criticized. In total, Valentin Pikul will create more than thirty novels and stories in forty years of creativity, the most widely read are Word and Deed, Favorite, as well as Katorga and Three Ages of Okini-San.

Pikul passed away in Riga after a heart attack in 1990. Three years later, he will be awarded the Sholokhov Prize posthumously. In 2008, a documentary film will be released with Valentin Pikul in the role of the main character - the Pen and the sword of Valentin Pikul.
