Born on November 22, 1940 in Lviv (son of the writer and poet Miroslav Zulawski, grandson of science fiction writer Jerzy Zulawski), the Zulawski family fled from the advancing Germans to Czechoslovakia, from there to Poland, then to France. Graduated from the directing department of the Higher Cinematographic Institute (IDEK). Zulawski's creative debut took place in Poland, where he returned after World War II. He worked as an assistant to Andrzej Wajda on the set of the film "Samson" (1961), the second director on the set of the films "Love of the Twenties" (1962) and "Ashes" (1965). In 1967 he created the television medium-length films "Pavoncello" (based on Stefan eromski) and "The Song of Triumphant Love" (after Ivan Turgenev) .
His film "The third part of the night" (1971) became the manifesto of the new Polish cinema, was awarded the Andrzej Munk Prize. The film "On the Silver Planet" was banned by the Polish authorities, filmed and released after the political changes in the country in 1989.
By this time, the director had managed to make a name in France, having removed the picture "The main thing is to love" with Romy Schneider and Klaus Kinski. This was followed by "Possessed by the Imp" (with Isabelle Adjani, Golden Asteroid at the Fantastic Film Festival in Trieste), "Public Woman" (with Valerie Kapriski, special jury prize at the Montreal Film Festival), "Crazy Love" (based on the novel "The Idiot" by Dostoevsky ), “My nights are more beautiful than your days”, “Loyalty” (based on the novel by Madame de Lafayette “The Princess of Cleves”). Sophie Marceau, who is 26 years younger than Zhulavsky, later became the director's wife and bore him a son. The couple split up in 2001. In Poland, the director also shot an erotic film "Shaman" (1996) based on a script by Manuela Gretkowska.
