Alexey Balabanov - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips, actor, director, screenwriter, producer.
Born in Sverdlovsk on February 25, 1959. After graduating from school, he entered the Gorky Pedagogical Institute at the translation faculty. Two years after graduation in 1981, he got a job as an assistant director at the Sverdlovsk Film Studio. In 1990, he graduated from the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors.
As a director he made his debut in big cinema in 1991, with the drama Happy Days (1991), in which Viktor Sukhorukov played the main role, who appears in almost every subsequent work of Balabanov. About a year later, together with Vasily Grigoriev (Producer) and Sergei Selyanov (Producer, Screenwriter, Director), he founded the CTB Film Company, which became the basis for most of his directorial work. The second full-length film by the director "The Castle" (1994), based on the novel by Franz Kafka, brought Balabanov the NIKA film award. In the same year, for the first and so far the only time, he acted as a producer with the film "Confession to a Stranger" (1994). As one of the directors and scriptwriters, he took part in the creation of the film almanac "Arrival of the Train" (1995). The crime drama Brother (1997) became the picture that turned the tide of the smoothly developing career of the director. The stunning film with the legendary actor Sergei Bodrov Jr. in the title role, and the magnificent musical accompaniment performed by the rock group "Nautilus Pompilius", becomes the highest-grossing film of the year and almost immediately receives cult status. The deafening success of the film brought fame to everyone who had a hand in its success, and the director and actors (including Viktor Sukhorukov) and the group "Nautilus Pompilius". Having filmed in 1998 the art-house drama "About Freaks and People" (1998) with Sergei Makovetsky in the title role, he surprised many of his fans, who expected something like "Brother" from him. However, despite all the unusualness of the picture, which tells about pornography in pre-revolutionary Russia, it was popular not only among a narrow circle of real moviegoers, but also among the wide audience. In 2000, the long-awaited continuation of the story about Danil Bagrov was released on the screens of cinemas. A much less psychologically profound film "Brother 2" (2000), in which, apart from Sergei Bodrov and Viktor Sukhorukov, who were familiar to the viewer from the first part, appeared actors Sergei Makovetsky, Kirill Pirogov and the popular pop singer Irina Saltykova, had little in common with the first part. Despite this, she enjoyed success with the audience. As in the first "brother", one of the components of the film's success was the film's excellent soundtrack, which gave a significant boost to the careers of groups and performers little known at the time of the film's release, such as Chicherina, Zemfira, Masha and the Bears ... Since then, Aleksey Balabanov has shot six more films: "War" (2002), "American" (2004), "Zhmurki" (2005), "It Doesn't Hurt" (2006), "Cargo 200" (2007) and "Morphine ”(2008), but none of them had success comparable to“ Brother ”. Alexey Balabanov continues to work as a director, delighting his fans with new films almost every year.
