Born on August 21, 1955 in Karelia, in the city of Olonets. In 1975-1978 he studied at the Tula Polytechnic Institute, where he headed an amateur film studio. In 1980 he graduated from the scriptwriting department of VGIK (workshop of N. Figurovsky), in 1989 - the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors (workshop of Rolan Bykov).
He shot his debut full-length film "Angel Day" together with Nikolai Makarov in 1980 (the film was released in 1988). Other directorial works: "Spirits of the Day" (1990), "The time of sadness has not yet come" (1995), "Russian Idea" (1995, documentary). In 1992 he organized and headed the STV film company. Producer of over 50 feature, animation and documentary films awarded at Russian and international film festivals. Producer of a number of TV programs, including "Linea Kino" (ORT, 1996-1999).
Winner of a number of film awards. He was awarded the Khanzhonkov medal as the best producer in 1995-1998. In 1999 he was awarded The Motion Picture Association (USA) prize for outstanding achievements in the development of independent filmmaking in Russia. He was awarded special prizes of the National Guild of Film Critics and Film Press "Golden Aries" -2001 (as the best film producer of the decade) and "Golden Aries" -2002 (with the formulation "For courage in promoting national cinema on the Russian screen"). Interviews with Sergei Selyanov about the problems of cinematography have been repeatedly published in the leading business print media in Russia.
