Hattie McDaniel was born in June 1895 in Kansas. Her father was a Civil War soldier and her mother was a religious songwriter. In total, her family had 13 children, among whom the future actress was the youngest. When Hattie was 5 years old, she and her family moved to Colorado. She first appeared on stage with her father and brothers, but after the death of one of them, the family show ceased to exist. Then she sang in a touring troupe, and since 1920 she performed original songs on one of Denver's radio stations. During the crisis, in 1929, she, like many then, lost her job and was forced to earn money at a local club.
2 years later, she moved to Los Angeles to her sisters, where she was eager to try her hand as an actress. The first film with Hattie McDaniel was released in 1932, she played a cameo role in the film Golden West. Since the beginning of 1930 she managed to appear in several films, performing mainly singers or chorus girls, but, unfortunately, her name was not even included in the credits. In 1934, the actress joined the Screen Actors Guild of the United States, thanks to which her acting career began to develop more rapidly. Then she performed key roles in such films: the comedy musical The Floating Theater, the Saratoga melodrama, the comedy Honest Confession. Numerous connections in Hollywood helped her to get the role of Mom in the tape Gone with the Wind, which later became her calling card, moreover, in 1940 she was awarded an Oscar, making her the first African American to be nominated and awarded this honorary award. The last movie with Hattie McDaniel, Family Honeymoon, was released in 1949.
