Born in New York to a family of Jews from Hungary. As a private he fought on the fronts of both world wars. From 1920 he worked in Broadway theaters, in 1928 he moved to Hollywood. In the 1930s, he worked under the direction of renowned producer David Selznick on film adaptations of European classics (including David Copperfield). According to Selznick's plan, it was Cukor who was to direct the film version of Gone with the Wind, but shortly before filming began, he left the project. Cukor was known for his conscientious work with actors. He owns an interesting record in this respect: three actors for Cukor's films were awarded an Oscar for the lead male role. The legendary Ingrid Bergman received her Oscar for the Gas Light. At the turn of the 1940s and 1950s, he directed four films with actress Judy Holiday, who also won an Oscar for one of them. Four-time Oscar winner Katharine Hepburn played her first role in Cukor, and Greta Garbo played her parting role. In 1976, in the wake of detente, 20th Century Fox and Lenfilm jointly shot a fairy tale film "The Blue Bird" based on the play of the same name by Maurice Maeterlinck.
Outside the set, Cukor was known as bon vivant. Regular parties at his villa attracted many Hollywood celebrities. He was not interested in women and lived with young men. Once he was even arrested for "indecent behavior", but thanks to the intervention of Hollywood tycoons, the case was quickly hushed up. Cukor died of a heart attack on January 24, 1983 and was buried in the Glendale Star Cemetery (where Selznick and Michael Jackson also rest). He left behind a fortune of several million dollars.
