Sergey Mikaelyan - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips.
Was born on November 1, 1923 in Moscow. Armenian Soviet director, screenwriter and artist. Laureate of the USSR State Prize (1976, for the film "Prize"), People's Artist of the RSFSR (1983). Graduated from the directing department of GITIS named after AV Lunacharsky (1951, workshop of B. Zakhava, M. Knebel, A. Popov), director's courses at the Mosfilm cinema (1959). He worked as a director of theaters in Saratov, Gorky, chief director of the Gorky Tashkent Russian Theater (1954-1956). Since 1956 - director of the Lenfilm film studio (in 1959-1961 - the M. Gorky film studio). Since 1989 - artistic director of the studio "Petropol" (film association "Lenfilm")
is a serious, professional filmmaker, who has several first-class films on his account. They were marked with festival awards and audience attention, but they did not have a loud creative fate. Maybe the reason is in himself, in his nature. After all, it is probably no coincidence that the most interesting and attractive characters in his best films are people who are not eager to become leaders, at first glance, they are simply losers. Such is the chess player Khlebnikov in the film "The Grandmaster" (1972). Or they are simply ashamed to take first positions in a shameless environment, Mikaelyan's best films are a delicate balance of reliable, original drama and strong, unconventional acting. After all, before the cinema there was a theater after graduating from GITIS. He was not a director in the capital at first, but he worked in a truly theatrical province - Saratov, Gorky. Later, for several years, he was the chief director of the Tashkent Russian Drama Theater. And his filmmaking primarily connects the literary basis of the film with the actors. Stars shine in a new way in his films, for example, Andrei Myagkov and Oleg Yankovsky in the named films, based on excellent scripts by L. Zorin and A. Vasinsky. The whole constellation was brought together by the director in the famous film "Prize", based on the play by Alexander Gelman. In many theaters it has become an event. The scalpel of journalistic analysis with incredible courage at that time plunged into the diseased tissues of the social organism, trying to cut them off from the healthy ones. Mikaelyan was not afraid to be in the second echelon of success. His stake was not on journalism, but on the wealth of the human world of this drama. Talented, beloved actors were inscribed in the types and characters in an unusual, unexpected way. The role of the rebellious brigadier Potapov was given to Yevgeny Leonov. In the performance of Oleg Yankovsky, the party organizer of the construction site acquired depth and intelligence.
In the stagnant 70s, at the beginning of the 80s, Mikaelyan discovered deep, genuine qualities in his usual heroes: moral and civic strength, non-vanity, spiritual dignity, inner freedom. It was the resistance of time, quiet, unseen, true.
Where did all this go in the films of the 90s: in the comedy Choosy Groom, in the melodrama French Waltz? They were filmed according to rather average scripts, one of the authors of which is the director himself. Blurred roles, expressionless acting.
It is hard to believe that the film about French partisans "French Waltz" was filmed in the footsteps of real events - there is so little life in it and so much bad cinema that it was shot by a man who went through the war, that he directed it 20 years ago according to the script by Y. Dunsky and V. Frida "Widows".
