Ekaterina Maksimova was born in February 1939 in the capital of the USSR - Moscow. At the very young age of eighteen, the future artist won the state ballet competition, then she first appeared on stage in The Nutcracker. At the age of 19, after graduating from the Moscow Choreographic School, she joined the Bolshoi Theater ballet troupe.
Since 1978 she can be seen in many foreign productions. She performed the main roles in the plays of the famous ballet master of the 20th century - the Frenchman Maurice Bejart. Also, around this period, films with the participation of Ekaterina Maksimova were released: Anyuta (the basis for the script was Chekhov's story Anna on her neck), as well as the film Old Tango. Since 1980, the actress has been taking part in performances of the dance ensemble of the famous Moscow classical ballet.
Throughout the entire path to fame, her mentor and assistant was Galina Sergeevna Ulanova, one of the best ballet teachers in the former USSR.
After graduating from GITIS (1980), she took up teaching. Two years later, at the same educational institution, she taught choreography, and several years later she was awarded the honorary title of professor. In addition to GITIS, Maksimova was engaged in tutoring at the Kremlin Ballet Theater, and was also a leading director and tutor at the Bolshoi Theater.

Maksimova was married to her stage partner, Vladimir Vasiliev. With their joint efforts, an open competition for the Arabes ballet dancers was held. For many years, the artist headed the judging staff.
