Born on August 7, 1972 in the family of screenwriter Pyotr Popogrebsky. Graduated from Moscow State University, Faculty of Psychology. Then he was engaged in translation activities. Together with a student of VGIK Boris Khlebnikov, he shot the short film "Pass". He began to write the script of a full-length feature film entitled "Koktebel" independently, and later Boris Khlebnikov joined him.
“At the moment when I was writing the script, I had never been to Koktebel. I was there already at the first stage of the script,” says Alexey. The film based on it was shown at the 25th Moscow International Film Festival in 2003 and received the Special Prize of the Film Festival, FIPRESCI and Russian critics prizes for its debut. Presenting a special prize to young directors, a member of the jury - director Agnieszka Holland personally presented them with scissors with a hint that one should be able to give up unnecessary things while editing a picture. "Koktebel" took part in the East European panorama of the festival in Karlovy Vary. In the future, Alexei Popogrebsky and Boris Khlebnikov do not intend to shoot films in tandem. Each of them has their own project.
