The band was founded on April 29, 2002. On this date, a concert dedicated to Ozzy Osbourne's drummer Randy Castillo was scheduled, and the guys got together for a performance. Almost all of them come from the group Guns N Roses - Slash (rhythm guitar, solo), Matt Sorum (drums, backing vocals) and Duff McKagan (bass guitar, backing vocals). They were joined by Dave Kushner (rhythm guitar) and Josh Todd, former Buckcherry frontman. Uniting for a one-time show, young people did not even think that the audience would receive them with a bang. This is how the Velvet Revolver group appeared. It happened in the state of California, in the Rancho Santa Margarita. Three months later, Josh left the band, and in September the guys started looking for a new vocalist. The auditions dragged on until mid-spring 2003, when Scott Wayland, the leader of the Stone Temple Pilots, became a new member. The first collaboration can be considered a film with Velvet Revolver Robbery in Italian, where they performed a cover version of the song Money. Not having time to join the new team, Scott was involved in a drug scandal, but the case was closed.

In August 2003 the band, which until June 19 was called Reloaded, embarked on their first album, signing to RCA Records. Working in the style of hard rock, the guys presented the song Slither, which immediately took first places in the charts and received a Grammy, and the debut album Contraband (2004) went platinum in Canada and the USA. For a year and a half, the group traveled around the world with a concert tour, gaining more and more fans. Fatigue and stress took their toll, as a result - Dave was noticed for drugs and alcohol, Scott continued to break the law, which disrupted concerts.

In 2005 it was announced that a new album would be working, and in 2007 fans heard the much anticipated work from Libertad. April 1, 2008 Scott Wayland was fired due to constant conflicts within the team. For some time the producers were looking for a new vocalist, but not finding a worthy one, a break was announced. Slash and Duff took up solo careers, Matt took up producing, Dave began recording music for TV. How many years Velvet Revolver has not officially announced its disbandment, but its members have long existed each on their own.
