February 23, 1889 - January 6, 1949 - American director
A former auto mechanic and photographer, he entered cinema in 1911 as a camera assistant and worked on many of Allen Duane's films since 1911. Cinematographer for Triangle since 1915, he often worked under the direction of David Griffith. He has directed several films with Douglas Fairbanks, directed by Duane. When America entered World War I, he served in intelligence in the photography department and later accompanied President Wilson across Europe as a senior cameraman. Returning to Hollywood in 1919, debuting two films with Fairbanks, he became a director. Fleming did not gain a reputation from critics as one of the greatest directors in Hollywood, but everyone agreed that he was a master of his craft. He often pushed the actors to brilliant acting and produced elegant, entertaining products, especially in men's adventure films. Some of his films from the 1930s are particularly entertaining for MGM, especially Bomb, Treasure Island, Brave Captains and the ever-popular Wizard of Oz. It is he who is listed in the credits as the director of the film "Gone with the Wind", for which he received an "Oscar", but so many people worked on the film that it is difficult to say to whom he owes his merits and to whom - his shortcomings. Fleming's last two films are Adventure (English) Russian. and "Jeanne d" Arc - failed.
