American filmmaker, film producer and screenwriter of Canadian descent.
Born April 3, 1885 in Toronto. In 1896 he emigrated with his parents from Canada to the USA. He studied at Notre Dame University and worked as an engineer for the Chicago-based Peter Cooper-Hewitt Company, which was involved in lighting. He began to show interest in cinema when it was still making its first steps, so he immediately accepted the offer from Essanay Studios when they offered him to work as a screenwriter for them. From 1911 he worked in Hollywood for the American Film Manufacturing Company. Since 1917 - founder and first president of the Motion Picture Directors Association (East Coast branch) .
Starting with short films, Allan soon switched to creating more serious films, including starring aspiring actors Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. Filmed one of the most famous child actors, Shirley Temple, helped launch director Victor Fleming's career. At the end of his own career, he preferred to shoot westerns. First wife - actress Pauline Bush (from 1915 to 1921, divorced). Second - Mary Shelton (from 1922 to 1954) .
He left the cinema in 1961 due to age, died on December 28, 1981 in Los Angeles at the 97th year of his life, was buried in the San Fernando Mission Cemetery.
Has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame - No. 6263 Hollywood Boulevard.
