Marcel Marceau was born on March 22nd, 1923 in Strasbourg, France. The parents were Jews who emigrated from Poland. Since childhood, he was interested in staging all sorts of numbers, depicting characters from popular fairy tales with his sister. At school he took an active part in various performances, often played the main roles. Once the parents and young Marcel Marceau went to the cinema, where, for the first time in his life, he saw the legendary Charlie Chaplin, after which he made him his idol and wanted to become like him. As a teenager, he earned money in order to save up for training at the School of Decorative Arts in Limoges, after which he entered the Sarah Bernhardt Theater in Paris.
Training had to be suspended due to the outbreak of World War II, which claimed the lives of almost all of his family and friends who died in concentration camps. Marseilles himself was directly involved in the insurgency and was a member of the Resistance organization.
After the war, Marseille returns to school and in 1947 creates his first image - the clown Beep, which brought him worldwide fame and recognition. In the same year, he creates the troupe of the Commonwealth of Mimes, which ended its existence only in 1960. After that, he performed solo for about ten years. He has toured all over the world, including the USSR. As a Chaplin fan, Marcel Marceau's roles in cinema were also mute and mostly comic. The last film with Marcel Marceau is called Silent Movie.
For his contribution to the development of theatrical art and the founding of the school of mimes, Marcel Marceau was awarded the highest award in France - the Order of the Legion of Honor.
Has two sons from his first marriage and two daughters from his second.
