Actress Vija Artmane (real name - Alida) was born in Latvia, Kaive village, on August 21, 1929. The girl was raised only by her mother, since a few months before the birth of her daughter, at the age of nineteen, her father tragically died. At the age of 15, Alida went to conquer the capital, where she enters to study at the theater studio. Janis Rainis and almost immediately changes his name. From this moment, already Vija Artmane, begins a new life.
Since 1949 he has been a member of the troupe of the Riga Dailes Theater - Vija will work there for 50 years. On the theatrical stage, the actress most often performed roles from the classical repertoire, but dreamed of trying her hand at cinema, playing modern heroines. So, the first film with Vija Artmane was released on television in 1956. The debut of the actress took place in the drama film directed by E. Penzlin and F. Knorre - After the Storm. Unfortunately, the role of Artmane in this picture was left without proper attention. But 7 years later, a war drama directed by Viktor Ershov - Native Blood (1963), where Viya plays the main role, was released.
This was followed by such films with Vija Artmane as Nobody Wanted to Die - a 1965 drama film; Edgar and Christina - 1966 drama from director Leonid Leimanis; The Andromeda Nebula is a fantastic 1967 melodrama; Gladiator - 1969 war drama The Dance of the Moth is a dramatic picture of 1971; The Arrows of Robin Hood - a 1975 film adventure; The Exchange is a 1980 drama; Moonzund - 1987 military historical melodrama and others.
In 2000, Viya played the main role in one of the episodes of the popular Russian detective television series Kamenskaya. And in 2003 she played Catherine II in the historical melodrama The Golden Age directed by Ilya Khotinenko.
The last years of her life, Vija lived in a country house that was located not far from Riga. The actress was sick a lot, suffered a heart attack and two strokes. Viya Fritsevna Artmane died on October 11, 2008. The grave of the great Soviet and Latvian Honored Artist is located at the Intercession Cemetery.
