Lura's parents are from Cape Verde, her father is from Santiago, and her mother is from San Nicolau.
Lura was a ballerina when the African music singer in Lisbon, Juka, asked her to appear on his new album. She was seventeen. She was supposed to sing backing vocals, but Juka insisted on a duet with him. It was a brilliant start and soon other African Portuguese-speaking celebrities offered Lura to work with them. Among them were Bonga from Angola and her compatriots Tito Parish, Paulo Flures and Paulinho Vieira.
Lura recorded her first album in 1996 with Portuguese producers. It was released commercially and was aimed at discos. Despite this, the composition Nha Vida (My Life) attracted wider interest and was shown at the Red Hot + Lisbon AIDS Campaign Festival. Lura was 21 years old at the time.
After the duet with Bong, the young singer was noticed by Luzafrica and produced the release of her second album in 2002.
In 2004 Lura recorded a real dedication to Cape Verde - Di Korpu Ku Alma (Souls and Bodies), and in 2005 Di Korpu Ku Alma was reissued with four previously unreleased songs (and DVD).
