The eldest of three brothers, Alan Arthur Bates was born in Derbyshire in February 1934. He described his family as "middle-middle class", his mother was a housewife, and his father was an insurance broker. Parents were fond of music and wanted their eldest son to become a pianist. But by the time Alan reached eleven years old, he already had other plans for the future: the boy was determined to become an actor.

Alan Bates graduated from Herbert Strut Grammar School in Belper, Derbyshire, and then received a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, where he studied acting with the classics of theater. After completing his studies with the RAF, Bates first appeared on stage in 1955, and the following year landed the role of a young working-class in Look Back in Anger, in which he established himself as a talented actor.

Four years later, the first film with Alan Bates, The Comedian, was released, in which he played alongside Laurence Olivier. Then followed a series of his successful roles in the films "The Greek Zorba", "Georgie's Girl", "Women in Love", "The Mediator". The actor married Victoria Ward in 1970, and a year later they had twins, Benedic and Tristan, who also became actors. Unfortunately, Tristan died at a young age from an asthma attack, and two years later, in 1992, Bates's wife passed away.

He performed many of his most famous roles late in his career, including in the film Gosford Park and in the 2001 television miniseries Love in a Cold Climate. Playing in the Broadway production of Fooled by Fortune, Bates won a Tony Award in 2002. And in January 2003, a month before his death, he was knighted.
