At the age of 7-8, Yevgeny, baptized into Orthodoxy, considered himself Russian, his early childhood was spent in travel related to the service of his father: Yekaterinodar, Dmitrov, Akhtyri, Ryazan, and others. Further childhood and youth were spent in Maikop. In 1914, Schwartz entered the law faculty of the Moscow People's University named after A. L. Shanyavsky, later transferred to the law faculty of Moscow University. But the theater interested him more than the profession of a lawyer.
In the fall of 1916 he was drafted into the army. In April 1917 he served as a private in the reserve battalion in Tsaritsyn, from where, in August 1917, as a student, he was transferred to a military school in Moscow and enlisted as a cadet. On October 5, 1917, he was promoted to ensign.
In February-March 1918 in Yekaterinodar he joined the Volunteer Army. Participated in the "Ice Campaign" as part of the Yekaterinodar units of Pokrovsky. The tremor of the hands, which Schwartz felt all his life, are the consequences of a severe concussion received during the storming of Yekaterinodar. After the hospital he was demobilized and entered the university in Rostov-on-Don, where he began working in the "Theater workshop". In 1921, together with the Rostov troupe, he arrived in Petrograd. He played in small theaters (in the opinion of Nikolai Chukovsky, without "any artistic talent"), worked as a salesman in a bookstore, was the secretary of Korney Chukovsky. He quickly became known as a brilliant storyteller, improviser. He began to write in 1923, when he left for the summer in Donbass, where he collaborated with the newspaper All-Russian Kochegarka, published in the city of Bakhmut; published a literary supplement to the newspaper - "Zaboy". After returning from Donbass, the first children's work by Schwartz appeared - "The Tale of an Old Balalaika", published in the July issue of the children's anthology "Sparrow" for 1924.
Since 1925 he became a regular contributor to the children's magazines "Hedgehog" and "Chizh", and his first story came out as a separate book. Later there were other books for children: "The War of Petrushka and Stepka-Rash", "Camp", "Balls", etc.
In 1929 the Leningrad Youth Theater staged the first play by Schwartz - "Underwood". Schwartz works a lot and fruitfully: he composes novels, short stories, poems, plays for children and adults, funny captions for drawings in the magazines "Hedgehog" and "Siskin", satirical reviews, librettos for ballets, reprise for the circus, puppet plays for Sergei's theater Obraztsova, screenplays. According to Schwartz's scripts, the film "Cinderella" was shot, with Yanina Zheimo, Faina Ranevskaya, Erast Garin, the film "Don Quixote" directed by Grigory Kozintsev, and others ..
During the Great Patriotic War, Schwartz continued to work in besieged Leningrad, refused to evacuate, but was later evacuated to Kirov, where he wrote plays: "One Night" - about the defenders of Leningrad - and "Distant Land" - about evacuated children. When the Leningrad Comedy Theater was evacuated to Dushanbe, Schwartz arrived there. After the war, he wrote several more plays, among them "An Ordinary Miracle".
