January 27, 1832, Daresbury, Cheshire, England, UK - January 14, 1898, Guildford, England, UK, real name: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson - English writer, mathematician, logician, philosopher, deacon and photographer.

There were 7 girls and 4 boys in the family. He began to study at home, showed himself to be smart and quick-witted. His father was engaged in his education. He was left-handed; according to unverified data, he was forbidden to write with his left hand, thereby injuring his young psyche (presumably, this led to a stutter).

At the age of 12, he entered a small private grammar school near Richmond. Lewis liked it there, but in 1845 he had to go to Rugby School, where the boy liked it much less. He studied at this school for 4 years and showed excellent ability in mathematics and theology.

In May 1850, he enrolled at Christ Church, one of the most aristocratic colleges at Oxford University, and moved to Oxford the following January. He did not study very well, but thanks to his outstanding mathematical ability after receiving his bachelor's degree, he won the competition for giving math lectures at Christ Church. He gave these lectures for the next 26 years. They gave a good income, although they were boring to him.

According to the charter of the college, he was ordained, but not a priest, but only a deacon, which gave him the right to preach without work in the parish. He began his writing career while attending college. He wrote poems and short stories, sending them to various magazines under the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll". This pseudonym was coined on the advice of the publisher and writer Yates. It is formed from the real names of the author "Charles Lutwidge", which correspond to the names "Carl" (Carolus) and "Louis" (Ludovicus). Dodgson chose other English matches for the same names and swapped them.

Other options for the pseudonym - Edgar Cutwellis, Edgard W.C. Westhill, and Louis Carroll - have been discarded. Gradually gained fame.

In 1864 he wrote the famous work "Alice in Wonderland".

Together with Liddon, Carroll was received in Moscow and Sergiev Posad by Metropolitan Philaret and Archbishop Leonid (Krasnopevkov).

He also published many scientific papers in mathematics under his own name. In particular, he developed one of the methods for calculating determinants (Dodgson condensation).

However, his mathematical work did not leave any noticeable trace in the history of mathematics, while his achievements in the field of mathematical logic were ahead of their time.

One of Carroll's hobbies was photography. The writer also possessed a collection of 37 photographs of Clementine Hawarden, the second largest after her family's collection.

Chess also played a significant role in the life of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.
