Perry has been interested in music since childhood. By his own recollection, at the age of ten, Steve heard Sam Cook's Cupid on the radio. This inspired Perry to become a singer.
In the mid-seventies, Perry was invited to the Alien Project as a frontman. He almost decided to part with music in 1977, after the death of his friend, the band's bassist, in a car accident. However, at his mother's insistence, Perry responded to an invitation from Journey's manager Walter Herbert.
Steve Perry was recruited to Journey to replace Robert Fleischman, the band's previous frontman, who was fired due to serious disagreements. A month later, the group released the album Infinity, which took 21st place on the Billboard chart and sold over 3 million copies in the United States. The album includes hits like Lights (lyrics to which Perry wrote) and Wheel In The Sky.
After an active concert tour, Journey recorded a new LP, Evolution, which repeated the success of the previous one: 20th place and triple platinum status, as well as the hit single Lovin ', Touchin', Squeezin 'by Perry, which took 16th place in the Hot 100.
Journey's next disc, Departure, has already climbed to number eight on the charts. At the end of 1980, immediately after the concert tour, Greg Raleigh left the group, tired of the busy touring life. He offered himself to replace Jonathan Kane, keyboardist for The Babys. With him, Journey released their magnum opus, Escape. The disc instantly topped the US charts and achieved diamond status (10 million copies). The band's subsequent release, Frontiers, was released in 1983. 6 million copies sold and the second place in the chart, held for several months - the disc was a great success, and could have become even a bigger hit than Escape, if not for the sharp decline in demand for rock due to the wild popularity of funk and, in particular , Michael Jackson's Thriller, which, by the way, did not allow Journey to climb to number one.
In 1984, Perry released Street Talk, his first solo album with hits such as Oh Sherrie, Foolish Heart and Strung Out. The album went double platinum. Oh Sherrie, the first single of the disc, occupied the first position of the hot hundred for two weeks, and Foolish Heart at the same time stood in the second - a rather rare case in musical practice.
After a hiatus in 1984-85, Journey returned to the recording studio. Perry took over virtually all of the sound work, becoming the band's producer and manager. The result - the album Raised On Radio, was released in May 1986. It had less success compared to the previous works of the group, but still took the third position on the chart and received a double platinum status, and the songs Be Good To Yourself, I'll Be Alright Without You, Suzanne and Girl Can't Help It occupied the Top -20 United States - 9th, 14th, 17th and 17th places, respectively. After a lengthy concert tour, Perry decided to disband Journey. The official reason is Steve's problems with his family, but in later interviews, Perry repeatedly said that the guys just decided to take a break from each other. The rest, however, dragged on for eight years.
In 1988 Steve starts recording a new album, Against The Wall, but it was never released due to the fact that Columbia Records was bought by Sony. The new owners put the album on the shelf, citing uncertainty about Perry's musical direction.
