Was born on October 13, 1933 in Moscow. In 1955 he graduated from the acting faculty of GITIS.

Film and television director, scriptwriter for TV films "Spring of the 29th" (1975), "Train Station Two Minutes" (1972); co-author of the script for the film "Sannikov's Land" (1972), author of the offscreen text for the film "White Sun of the Desert" (1969). Host of the TV show "Serpentine". Since 1994 - Member of the Board of Trustees of the NTV television company. Deputy Chairman of the Council for Culture and Art under the President of the Russian Federation. Teacher, leads a director's workshop at the RATI (formerly GITIS).
