Born June 27, 1940 in Voroshilov (now Ussuriisk, Primorsky Territory).
Father is a military man, mother is a housewife. He spent his childhood in the garrisons. He studied music at the Officers' Houses. At first he did not dare to enter the theater school because of a strong stutter, he entered the music school for the button accordion course. Later I decided to go to Moscow. In many ways, according to the actor, support in admission was provided by Wolf Messing, who was once in love with his mother. Despite his stuttering, Khmelnitsky is admitted to the Theater School named after B.V. Shchukin (B.E. Zakhava's course) without the third round, which he finishes in 1966.
While still a student, Yuri Lyubimov notices him and invites him to his theater. Already at the beginning of his theatrical career, Khmelnitsky plays Nozdrev, Woland, Mayakovsky.
In 1964-1982 he was an actor of the Moscow Drama and Comedy Theater on Taganka. Thanks to Lyubimov, he is recovering from a 25-year stuttering. At the time of Vysotsky's illness, he was urgently introduced to the play "The Life of Galileo", where, on the wave of emotional uplift, the entire text speaks without a single hesitation.
