Born on December 15 (28), 1904 in Warsaw.
Artist and director of operetta. Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1945). Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1955). People's Artist of the RSFSR (1960) .
In 1925 he graduated from the Central Technical School of Theater Arts in Moscow (CETETIS) and began stage activities in the Blue Blouse Theater, then until 1947 he was an actor in the Moscow Chamber Theater, played roles in drama and musical performances. The star of Yulia Khmelnitsky lit up on the stage of this theater - he became the first performer of the role of Macky in the first production of The Threepenny Opera - Opera of the Beggars by Brecht-Weil, Maraschin in Lecoq's Girofle-Girofle.
Since 1947 - an actor of the Moscow Operetta Theater, since 1952 - the chief director of the Volgograd Theater of Musical Comedy, in 1956-1964. - Leningrad Theater of Musical Comedy, in which he created the legendary troupe of actors. He staged performances in the theaters of musical comedy in Khabarovsk, Omsk, Saratov, Kazan, Odessa. In 1972-1975. - Artistic director of the Krasnodar Theater of Musical Comedy. Together with his wife Natalya Gorina, also an actress of the Chamber Theater, he taught at theatrical universities in Moscow. In 1932-1947. taught a vaudeville class at a school at the Chamber Theater (Moscow), in 1948-1950. taught at the Moscow School of Music. A.K. Glazunova, 1950-1952 - in GITIS them. A. V. Lunacharsky. In 1957 he directed his first and only film "Mr. X" with Georg Ots in the title role. The film originated from his own 1956 theatrical production. Author of a new text for a number of operettas, including Lehar's "Gypsy Love", Offenbach's "Duchess of Gerolipteins". Passed away 11 October 1997.
Daughter Marina Yulievna Khmelnitskaya - was the rector of GITIS.
