Genevieve Bujo was born into a family of French-Canadian workers. Her father was a bus driver. Bujo's parents were staunch Catholics, and the girl received her education at a convent school. In order to be able to attend the drama department at the Quebec Conservatory, she was forced to earn money as a usher at the Montreal cinema.
From 1962 she played in the theater, then on radio and television, and at the same time made her film debut. Her breakthrough role in Alain Rene's film War is Over, co-starred with Yves Montand. After gaining success, Genevieve moved to France, where she worked with directors such as Philippe de Broca and Louis Malle.
