Born May 23, 1942 in Trenton (New Jersey, USA), in the family of dentist Fred Lefkowitz (1907-1993) and Sara (Sally) Lefkowitz (nee Urken, 1906-1990), who came from families of Jewish immigrants from Latvia (then in the Russian Empire). He studied anthropology at Greenell College, but before graduating he got a job as a diver. At the age of nineteen he married his future co-author Patricia Knop, who was then also 19 years old.
He came to the cinema in the early 1970s. Debuting as an actor in Ski Boom (1971), Zalman King began making films himself in the 1980s. He is now widely known as a director, screenwriter and producer, thanks to such films as "Nine and a half weeks" (1986), "Wild Orchid" (1990), "Two Moons Junction" (1988), the television series "Red Shoe Diaries" .
The director's cause of death was cancer, which he has been battling over the past few years.
