Graduated from VGIK.
He made his film debut with The Lonely Voice of Man (1978; released in 1987). Constant co-author of Alexander Sokurov, screenwriter of ten of his films.
Laureate of the Cannes Film Festival for the script of the film "Taurus" (1999). More than once he turned to the subjects of the "Silver Age" and the Art Nouveau era. A well-known example is the mystical thriller Mister Designer (1988).
One of the organizers of the informal club "Poetry" in Moscow (1986).
Since 1992, he has been the head of the department of film drama at VGIK.
Laureate of the Apollo Grigorieva, "Nika", "Golden Aries".
