Children: Merezhko Maria Viktorovna (born 1973), graduated from the directing department of VGIK, philologist, director; Merezhko Ivan Viktorovich (born in 1982), graduated from the acting department of GITIS, now works at Lenfilm as a production designer.
The native village of Viktor Merezhko is translated from German as "Olgino Pole". It got its name in honor of one of the daughters of the former owner - the landowner Engelgard. Parents V.I. Merezhko were rural employees. My father worked as the head of a separator station for the distillation of milk, which was handed over to the villagers as a tax. There were four children in the family - three sons and one daughter. Due to the peculiarities of not only the father's work, but also his personal character, the family had to repeatedly change their place of residence - the Rostov Region, Stavropol Territory, Krasnodar Territory. They lived extremely poorly, were on the verge of extinction from hunger, and in 1952, according to a letter, the mother's sisters moved to Ukraine, where life at that time was both satisfying and calmer. The village where Merezhko moved was located near the city of Cherkassy and was called Russian Polyana. The children went to the Ukrainian school, with difficulty, but they learned the Ukrainian language, successfully completed the ten-year period and went in all directions.
The middle son, Victor, tried to enter the Kiev Polytechnic Institute at the Faculty of Film Engineers, but could not pass the entrance exams and did anything for a whole year - he worked as a woodcutter in the forest, then went to work in Arkhangelsk. In 1956 he left for Lvov to enter the institute. In what, for him it did not matter - if only to study and it is in Lviv. The mother's brother lived in the Lvov region, he promised at least something to help his nephew. In Lvov, Victor entered the technological faculty of the Ukrainian Polygraphic Institute, although before that he had no idea about printing. All five years of study, Victor was helped by his uncle - at least a jar of jam a month, and sometimes a little money.
After graduating from the institute, V.I. Merezhko insisted on distribution to his native Rostov region, to the Molot publishing house. He worked as a process engineer, although even then all his thoughts were about cinema. In his free time, he wrote simple, sometimes elementary script stories, went through a competition to a city amateur film studio and became there a very noticeable (at the level of filmmakers) figure as a screenwriter. I dreamed of VGIK, of the screenwriting department. He did not feel like a writer at all, but he understood that he had a flair for scriptwriting.
After working for two years in a publishing house, in 1963 he sent his works to a competition in Moscow. They were rejected by the admissions committee, since the graduate of the university had to work the obligatory 3 years. Viktor Merezhko had to "plow" in the printing field for another year. In 1964, he again sent a letter to VGIK. This time, the documents were accepted and Viktor was enrolled in the first year, in the workshop recruited by Alexey Speshnev.
After 2 years, A. Speshnev began to shoot his own films and devoted less and less time to students. The course asked the department to replace the master, and the workshop was headed by the oldest teacher and editor, Professor Ilya Vaysfeld. He led the students to the defense and actually became the "godfather" of Viktor Merezhko in the cinema. With his submission, already in the 2nd year of the institute, Merezhko was given a short script for "Mosfilm", which was not a frequent matter for VGIK, according to which the feature film "Zarechenskie Grooms" was shot at the country's largest studio.
While still a student, Merezhko got married. He brought his young wife Tamara to Moscow, and she shared the poor, but cheerful life of a young screenwriter. After graduating from VGIK, life turned its back on him. For three years Merezhko tried to break into the studio, but everywhere he was refused - three years without a job, without a Moscow registration, without money and prospects. Then Weisfeld and the playwright Braginsky helped: Merezhko received an order at the Lenfilm studio. According to his script, a year later the film "Hello and Goodbye" was shot there, which was noticed by discerning critics.
Since then, films based on V.I. Merezhko starred one after another: "Tryn-grass", "Bog", "Relatives", "Citizen Nikanorova awaits you", "Sorry", "Flights in a dream and in reality", "A lonely woman wants to meet", "Leaving - leave "," Dog Feast "," Racket "," Ryaba Chicken "," Under the Blue Sky "," Three Women and a Man "... - a total of 46 films shot by many eminent directors, not counting short films and cartoons. For the motion picture "Flights in Dreams and in Reality" in 1980 V.I. Merezhko was awarded the USSR State Prize.
In addition to the screenplays of V.I. Merezhko also began to write plays - only 16. Some of them were staged in almost all theaters of the USSR. The most famous are "Proletarian Mill of Happiness", "Night Fun", "Scream", "I Am a Woman", "Women's Table in the Hunting Hall", "Two from the Highway", "Caucasian Roulette". Currently V.I. Merezhko finishes work on the play "Men on the Weekend" and begins writing the script for the TV serial "The Crime Saga".
For many years Viktor Merezhko has been the Secretary of the Unions of Cinematographers of Russia and Moscow. He is a member of the Writers' Union of Russia, chairman of the board of the House of Cinema. Together with Yuliy Gusman, he founded the NIKA Film Academy and became its president. Together with I. Shevchuk and S. Novozhilov, Viktor Merezhko established one of the most prestigious - the Anapa Film Festival of the CIS and Baltic countries "Kinoshock", also becoming its president.
In 1987 he was awarded the title of "Honored Art Worker of Russia".
He devotes his rare free time from work to his family, children, his beloved parrot, and his country house.
Lives and works in Moscow.
