Was born in Madras in 1957. His two older brothers, Anand and Vijay, played tennis, and Ashok followed in their footsteps. In 1974, he became a finalist at the Wimbledon Youth Tournament, losing to American Billy Martin. For several years he played in professional tennis tournaments, but unlike his brothers, he did not achieve significant success in adult tennis. His best results at the individual level were reaching the quarterfinals of the Grand Prix in Bangalore in 1976 in singles, several semi-finals in pairs (including with Vijay in 1976 in Little Rock and with Anand two years later in Kolkata) and exit, also in pairs, to the third round of the 1977 US Open. As part of the Los Angeles Strings, he became the 1978 World Team Tennis professional tennis league champion;
At the age of 25, Ashok, who lived in Los Angeles and made several useful acquaintances among Hollywood figures, decided to link his further career with cinema and became the first Indian producer in Hollywood. After several years of work on low-budget comedies and erotic films (including the "Night Watch" series), Amritraj switched to mid-range action films. The leading actors in his films in the 90s included Jean-Claude van Damme (Double Impact), Michael Dudikoff and Dragon Don Wilson. Later, having already established a name for himself in Hollywood, he worked with such masters as Kate Hudson, Cate Blanchett, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Steve Martin and Angelina Jolie, and the genres of his films ranged from comedies to melodramas. At the turn of the first decades of the 21st century, in the list of actors with whom Amritraj worked, Sandra Bullock, Queen Latifah, Kevin Bacon and John Goodman appeared. During his career, he created and headed several production companies, the largest of which was Hyde Park Entertainment, founded in 1999, working closely with 20th Century Fox and Walt Disney Studios, and at the end of 2011 he added National Geographic Films to his film empire.
