Alexander Dovzhenko is a well-known Soviet director, playwright and writer. He was born in 1894 on September 10. In 1950 he received the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR, and in 1959 he posthumously became a laureate of the Lenin Prize. In 1941 and 1949 he was awarded the Stalin Prizes.

He was born in a large peasant family in Vyunishche (a farm in the Sosnitsky district, now the village of Sosnitsa in the Chernihiv region). Dovzhenko comes from the Poltava Chumaks, who settled in Sosnitsa at the beginning of the 18th century. Alexander's parents were illiterate people, their family was poor. Although they had enough land, it did not give a crop. The couple had fourteen children, but only Alexander and daughter Polina survived. The rest of the children died before even reaching working age, therefore, recalling his childhood, Dovzhenko could only say about eternal crying and frequent funerals. In order for his son to receive a decent education, the father had to sell a tithe of land. Dovzhenko was educated at a local school, and later at an elementary school. The boy grasped everything on the fly and was an excellent student. He loved to read and grew up as a real dreamer. He enjoyed painting, architecture, swimming and teaching.

In 1956, Alexander Dovzhenko died at his dacha in Peredelkino from a heart attack, on the eve of the filming of the film Poem about the Sea. His widow Julia Solntseva finished work on the tape after her husband's death. The talented director left behind many amazing film works. Alexandra Dovzhenko's filmography includes many films, including the Berry of Love (debut work in 1926), Arsenal (1929), Michurin (1948) and Farewell America! (1951), as well as many other tapes.

You can also watch Alexander Dovzhenko's work in documentary films Bukovina - Ukrainian Land (1940), Victory in the Right Bank Ukraine (1944), Liberation (1940) and Battle for our Soviet Ukraine.
