Christopher D'Olier Reeve (September 25, 1952 - October 10, 2004) - American theater and film actor, director, screenwriter, public figure. He gained worldwide fame after playing the role of Superman in the 1978 American film of the same name and its sequels. His other film roles remained less prominent. In addition to filming in films (about twenty feature films) and on television, he played in the theater, took part in the work on numerous documentaries and popular science programs, participated in charity events and campaigns in support of artists in various countries, in the protection of the environment , children and human rights, collaborated with Amnesty International .
Reeve played the piano, was an athlete, performed stunts in films, flew the Atlantic twice in a small plane alone, was an experienced rider, yachtsman, scuba diver, hang glider. Reeve married Dana Morosini (1961-2006) in April 1992, and they had a son, William, in June of that year. Reeve also had two children from a previous long relationship with Guy Axton: Matthew (born 1979) and Alexandra (born 1983). On May 27, 1995, after falling from a horse during a race in Virginia, he broke his cervical vertebrae and was paralyzed. Doctors could not put the actor on his feet, but saved his life by performing a unique operation. He was paralyzed below the shoulders, could not breathe on his own, and could speak only with the help of an apparatus inserted into the trachea. Doctors connected an electrical stimulator to the actor's paralyzed diaphragm, which caused contractions of the main respiratory muscle. Since then, he has devoted his life to rehabilitation therapy and, together with his wife, opened a center to train the paralyzed in the skills of independent living. Despite his injury, Reeve continued to work in television, film and community activities. Died of a heart attack on October 10, 2004, having spent the last 9 years of his life confined to a wheelchair.
