American stand-up comedian, actor, screenwriter, playwright and producer. Best known for his comedy column "Back in Black" on The Daily Show, as well as appearances on HBO. Black is considered one of the most cynical comedians in the United States, and the nervousness and anger he often displays during his performances have become his trademark. He currently resides in New York.

Lewis Black was born in Washington, DC and raised in Silver Spring, Maryland. He received a BA in drama from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (he studied for a year at the University of Maryland at College Park before joining it) and an MA in drama from the Yale University School of Drama. In the 1960s, he belonged to the hippie movement, took part in their protests and used large quantities of hallucinogenic and narcotic substances. This experience served in part later for his plays and later performances in the stand-up genre.

He wrote over 40 plays and was the Artistic Director of the 42nd Street Theater in New York's Hell's Kitchen from 1981-1989. After a change in the leadership of the theater, Black left it and continued his career as a stand-up comedian on television and radio.

During the same period of his life, Black got married. In his autobiography, he wrote that when he left the registry office with his new wife, he saw a man handcuffed by police officers. Black calls this event an ominous omen. The marriage lasted less than a year.
