Armand Anthony Assante Jr. (English Armand Anthony Assante Jr.) was born in New York in 1949 in the family of the painter Armand Anthony Assante-Sr. and his wife, music teacher and poet Catherine Assante. His father had Italian roots, and his mother's ancestors were from Ireland, and therefore the future actor was brought up in Catholic traditions. He made his acting debut in 1974 in Lords of Flatbush, and he achieved success a couple of years later, after roles in the series How to Survive a Marriage and The Doctor. The role of the handsome Frenchman Henri Alan Tremont, beloved heroine of Goldie Hawn, in the comedy "Private Benjamin" also added to his popularity.
