Michael Anthony McNulty was born on December 14, 1982 in Manchester, England. His father was a military man, so Matthew lived in Germany as a child. Studied at Lane Johnson Theater School. There he also began to play on stage in student productions, where one of the roles was the role of Danny Shapiro in the play "Sexual Depravity in Chicago".
McNulty studied at the Lane Johnson School of Theater. In order to join the Actors' Union and register as an actor, he changed his acting name to Matthew McNulty, as the Actors Association already had a member with the same first and last name as his.
