David Cronenberg was born on March 15, 1943 in Toronto. He comes from a progressive Jewish family, his mother was a musician and his father was a writer. The real surname of Cronenberg's paternal grandfather is Foreman. Arriving in the United States, he took the name of the richest man in his native Lithuanian town. In his own words, Cronenberg is an atheist and does not believe in life after life. While attending a local university, he directed two experimental films: Stereo (1969) and Crimes of the Future (1970). Cronenberg's first commercial film, Abomination, was released in 1975. Videodrom, released in 1982, attracted wide attention to the director - one of the style-forming films of the decade.
Until the early 2000s, Cronenberg specialized in the genre of "body horror" (literally, "body horror", the source of horror - unexplained mutations of the human body). Many of his paintings raise the problem of what is considered normal and what is abnormal, the fragility of the line between these concepts. After the fantastic thriller "Existence" (1999, "Silver Bear" at the Berlin Festival), released a few months before "The Matrix" and raising similar philosophical issues, the director's attention began to shift from bodily abnormalities to social abnormalities. In critically acclaimed films of the 2000s, Cronenberg paints a gloomy world in noir colors, where violence is rooted in human nature.
