Jennifer's father Vic Morrow was a famous actor of Russian-Jewish origin, and her mother was a screenwriter. At the beginning of her career, Jennifer Lee Morrow gave up her father's "star" surname and changed her name to Jennifer Jason Lee in order to achieve recognition on her own. She took the middle name Jason after the actor Jason Robards, a friend of the Morrow family. As a teenager, Jennifer attended Lee Strasberg's classes. It gained wide popularity in 1982 thanks to the teenage comedy Rapid Change at Ridgemont High School. Jennifer Jason Lee received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle. In 1999 she starred in the cult film "Existence" by David Cronenberg .
From September 2, 2005 to November 15, 2010 Jennifer Jason Leigh was married to director Noah Baumbach. On March 13, 2010, their son Romer Emmanuel was born.
