Diana Dale Dickey was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, the son of the writer and politician Missy Dickey, who ran for the state legislature in 1974. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Tennessee. In the late seventies, she embarked on a career in theater, performing first in independent plays, and in 1989 made her debut in the Broadway production of The Merchant of Venice. In 2009 she received good reviews from critics for her leading role in the Broadway production of "A Streetcar Named Desire."
