Karen Black is an American actress who gained popularity thanks to her work in films such as Nashville, The Great Gatsby, Easy Rider.

Karen Blanche Black was born on July 1, 1939, in the county town of Park Ridge, Illinois, and was the second daughter of a Jewish family of children's writer Elsie Marie and engineer and businessman Norman Arthur Black. Arthur Charles Ziegler, classical musician and first violin in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, was Black's paternal grandfather. The older sister Karen Gale later also became an actress. Karen has German, Czech and Norwegian roots.

After completing her secondary education, Black became a student at Northwestern University in Evanston, and a couple of years later moved to New York, where she studied with Lee Strasberg at the Film and Theater Studios.
