He started his career with experimental and documentary films in the early 80's. He founded The Icelandic Film Corporation in 1990 and has since become the most important production company in Iceland. The company produces his films and also collaborates with other directors and producers. An international network was created with other co-production companies, including Zentropa Productions by Lars von Trier and American Zoetrope by Francis Ford Coppola. Their movie Nature's Children (1991) was nominated for an Oscar for Best Non-English Language Film. Fridrik also starred in the comedy film The Biggest Boss (2006).
He grew up in Iceland in the 1960s and was heavily influenced by American films. Acquaintance with the work of Akira Kurosawa played a decisive role in his decision to become a film director. He works with renowned Icelandic writers and screenwriters. His work with Hrafn Gunnlaugsson is Nature's Children (1991), Lovely Angels (1990), and Film Days (1992). His work with Ainar Karason includes White Whales (1987), Devil's Island (1996) and Falcons (2002). It is worth noting here the strong visual style of his films and the stunning images.
